Why, hello there..

The report of my death was an exaggeration.
- Mark Twain

It's been almost six and a half years since I updated this space. A lot of things have changed and a lot has stayed the same. I no longer stand in front of a doorway as my primary employment. However, the mentality has followed me in my new adventures.

I hope to start updating again. This time around the posts won't be focused as much on working doors, unless I find myself doing that again.

For those that are still following the blog, I hope this finds you well. Feel free to post in the comments section to let me know you're still out there.

Onward...

The time has come to travel on. I realize that posts have become rather few and very far between. I'm not posting this in hopes that it will begin again but to allow a little look into why. The time came to move away from the doorway. As for how long? I don't know. It could only be a short time or a long time.

I was told once to "never do you're job so well that you won't get promoted". Which does kind of go against everything I was taught. I was taught that you should do you're job the best you can so you can move on to a higher position. Yet the first has come to fruition. I became so good in my position that they didn't want to move me from it. So the time came to move myself from the position and hopefully onto better things.

In fact, I am not only moving away from the doorway I'm also changing time zones. Soon I'll be in the Pacific Time Zone. It'll be a nice warm change, not only for me but the blog as well. The blog will be starting to cover more grounds as I do. I'll do my best to keep you posted.

Mobile Posts...

Recently Blogger has added Mobile Posting to the list of ways for bloggers to reach their readers. I thought I'd give it a shot. The posts are limited to 150 characters so they'll be short and sweet, just like most conversations I have while at work.

I'm not on here as much as I'd like to be but I think this will help out a lot. Most thoughts pop in my head and disappear by the time I get here. I guess we'll just have to see where this takes me.

Change...

I've tried to keep up with this blog but I've not been doing a good job. There are still many that come here on a daily basis to see if there are updates. I've even received a few emails about this.

Over the years I've tried to make it a priority over other things but that's not working very well. Life has a way of being more demanding than we'd all like. So I'm opening it up to more interesting things and I'm not going to try and keep it focused on the main subject of the work that I do.

I'll be intertwining it with popular subjects and posting my thoughts. That's what this whole thing was based on from the beginning and if you can't change with your thoughts then you can't change at all. Maybe more things will come to light.

So as the nation banked on Change, so will I. More posts on the way.

Overload...

My stress level has either dropped or I've overloaded it.

Remember when your parents used to say, "I've had it up to here with you!" and they would draw an imaginary line near their neck. That's basically how I feel but my stress line has always been much higher. I've learned over the years how to handle a lot of stress. However, I'm being overloaded with stress and numerous other things.

Work has been the same as always except for a couple things. An establishment close to ours has decided to start doing hip hop nights. It's drawn huge attention from certain types. The people that go to this place have a tendency to hang on the sidewalk in front instead of going inside. This deters people from walking down the sidewalk. I've literally seen people cross the street in order to walk that direction down the road.

Now, I'm not against this particular type of event occurring. Not as long as the establishment can handle what's going on. As long as they can police their own property and make sure gang activity, drinking outside and such matters are under control.

A few years ago there was a place just down the road that had this same event. They could not handle the situation and it turned into a shooting gallery. Not only were guns involved but knives and constant fights. They could not handle the event and the owners did what they thought was right. They closed down, remodeled and removed all chances for live entertainment. Personally, I thought that wasn't the best idea. They could have brought on extra personnel and the proper equipment to handle the situation. They could invest in hand held metal detectors and patted everyone down as they came in.

So here's my worry. Being in such close vicinity of this venue has caused some problems here as well. We've had some problems now with gang bangers coming in. They come in, grab ass, throw around their gang signs and cause arguments. This isn't a problem that bothers me. The problem that bothers me is what they might be carrying.

Here it is illegal to wear a bullet proof vest unless your a cop. Luckily I know the right people and I have been able to acquire something very similar. Most of the cops I know already know that I wear it at work. They don't care because they know it's useful for me and I'm not a threat.

If I'm lucky I'll be out of this business soon. While I can recognize the changes in the neighborhood it seems that the management and owners can not. They don't seem to know the problems that are happening. They seem to think that they're paying me enough to deal with it. Well, they're not.

No matter what you do, it always comes down to money. You can do the same job your entire life but if the money never changes you'll find a way out fast.

With the economy changing as it has, wages need to go up in order to survive. Or the economy needs to become better. Take a guess which one will happen first. Neither. It will be a stalemate until the person that is earning the money makes the change. That person is me. I'm not getting a raise or any type of benefit by keeping this job. It's time I moved on.

More as it occurs.

Hiatus...

The blog will be on a hiatus for a while. How long? I don't know. Certain events have arose and this is keeping my hands tied.

I will be writing posts but I will not be publishing them until the right time has come.

It's nothing too serious so don't worry too much. I should be back in a few weeks.

Until then.

Things change. People don't...

If you've been reading for a while you'll remember some posts about me wanting to change paths. Doing this type of work for a long period of time will tend to do that to you.

I have ideas about the future. It entails me owning my own establishment. In order to do that I've been working in this industry for a long time so that I can get the experience that I want to have. The experience is essential when pursuing this type of an endeavor.

So there's my reasoning for wanting to do more and different positions.

In my opinion, I don't need to know how to bartend in order to open a bar. Granted, it's a good thing to know but I don't see it as a necessity. I figure that I'll hire bartenders when the time comes to open my own place. After all, who's going to bring more money into a bar, the big scary brute or the cute little lady?

Cute little ladies will always bring more money into a bar or club faster than any man will. Unless it's a gay bar or a male strip club. Neither of which I plan on running or opening.

So the experience that I'm truly looking for is actual bar management. Purchasing, paperwork, shift managing, problem solving and all the rest. All of which I have from previous and present jobs but none of the previous jobs were in the bar industry.

I'm putting a time limit of ten years on my goal of ownership. Basically, I want to have my own place up and running before that ten years is up. Maybe this blog can help with that, maybe it won't. Either way I plan on it happening through the many different contacts that I've already made.

I've had some positive interests already. All I need to do now is get the ball rolling. Scout locations and get the proper legal information. Which I'll gladly do once I have the ability to take a little time off.

Money is also a huge factor in opening such a business. Which is another reason behind working so much and not having the proper time to update here. I'm working on that and getting posts up and ready.

The scheduling option on this blog is great for that. I can put together some posts and schedule them to post on certain dates. This will work great for the D.I.C.K. posts. I have a few up and ready to publish for the next few Fridays.

Summer time is always a busy time. I'll try to keep you all informed of what's going on the best I can. Until then...

Craziness...

Things have been a little crazy lately. People are being shifted around and positions are slightly changing. I'll be bringing up a few things in the next few weeks and trying my best to bring back a little normalcy. I've decided to get rid of the actual weekly updating restriction that I put on myself.

I thought that I could actually write more frequently if I wrote on specific days. Of course something like that never really works for me. Most of the things I do in regular life are no where near regular. I don't think I do anything on a regular basis except the normal routines the body puts forth.

The one thing that I will keep at a normal schedule will be the D.I.C.K. postings on Fridays. Every Friday at 1pm there will be a new post until I run out of material. That really shouldn't happen for a long time.

So I guess by saying that I'm not updating on a scheduled basis, I just did update on time. We'll see how it goes through the week. Keep checking back and we'll see how it goes.

Friday's will be the one day that there will always be a post. You'll have to keep an eye on the site or Follow Me on Twitter if you're not subscribed to the RSS or Email service.

In the mean time, I found a web site where you can look up any Driver's License from the United States. Not just the license but any person's actual license. It will definitely help out when it comes to writing the D.I.C.K. entries.

Feel free to check it out. The site is called, Driver's License Search . US

I found mine on there and I'm in process of having it removed.

Fake I.D. VI: Bringing it home...

Throughout my time I've collected a lot of fake i.d.'s. I've recently decided to actually put them out here for more people to see. I know there's a lot of people that like the stories that I put up but now comes a little more detail.

In the coming weeks I'm going to actually post some of these fakes that I've taken away from people. I had a friend of mine go through and distort the i.d.'s so faces won't be recognized and names and vital information is either changed or removed. No need in leaving that on there for it to come back on me.

I tried to come up with an interesting title to use for these posts. I bounced the idea around with a friend of mine and we came up with a decent idea although the title is rather long. So they'll be titled D.I.C.K.. Which is short for Devious Identification and Contraband Knowledge. Seems rather justified since most people think I'm a dick when I take away their fakes anyways.

I'll go through each i.d. and list off the reasons as to why it's fake. If I remember what actually happened that night I'll add that on to the entry as well.

For now I'm only going to post one fake i.d. per week. I'll even post it earlier in the day so any door personnel that are reading this can see it before they head off to work. Hopefully it'll stick in some minds for the busy nights ahead.

I'll put up my evidence so you can read through it and decide. As to how I do that is still to be seen. Let's just say it's my way of helping out the doorstaff that actually likes doing their jobs. I believe the posts will be popping up on future Friday afternoons.

As with anything else you might read in a blog remember this. My entries are based on my experiences. Take it as a grain of salt or take it as gospel, just don't quote me unless you come to me first.

Along with these entries I'm going to be putting a new section up in the Links area on the side. It will include links to sites that carry equipment that is useful for the job. If you do this type of work and have links feel free to send them to me through email or post it in a comment. Just don't spam the comments, that shit is annoying. If it becomes an issue I'll have to turn off the comment feature.

So that's a brief introduction on a few of the upcoming events. Let's hope it all works out the way I hope.

2012??

So I jumped on the site today and realized that it's been a while since I last put up a post. Then I noticed the site count. The count since September of 2007 is 2112. The count since I originally posted the site back in 2005 is right under that at 4640. That's a pretty significant increase, a little less than half of the total traffic has happened in less than 8 months.

Then I noticed the number 2112 again. It made me start thinking of the number 2012 and then my mind skipped over to Nostradamus and his prediction of the world coming to an end in the year 2012. Then I looked over and noticed the tv was on. I sat and stared at it blankly for a few minutes. Then I wondered when and why they actually made a movie version of the tv show Miami Vice. Really?

If you can't tell by my ramblings I've been out of focus lately. There's more news to come based off the On the Outs post I put up back in February. I won't go into detail as to whether it's good or bad news just yet. You'll find out in good time. I may or may not have to find a new title for the blog.

Until then I will put forth a conscious effort to keep updating on a regular basis. Even though it's only been a little over a week, it feels like it's been months since I've been on here.

The weather's getting nicer out which means there will be even more drunks out and about. When the weather's nice people go out earlier to get their 'stupid' on. Which I guess is a good thing. I like to call it job security. As long as there are stupid people getting drunk I'll always have a job. What other jobs have that kind of security?

Until next time.

Be safe.

On the outs...

"Your killin me here..." Paulie's elbows rest on the desk while his head rests in his hands.

"I'm just tired man."

"Tired? Of what?"

"The life. Nothing changes. It's constantly the same shit every night."

"Every job gets that way."

"Not like this. It's the same faces day in and out. The same problems that won't change."

"What can we do to change this?"

"I've made suggestions. You know they're good ones. The owners just don't want to do any of it."

"Listen, give me some time, I'll talk to them and see what I can do to keep you around."

"I think your words will just fall on silent ears."

"Let's take that chance."

Digg It man...

So I thought I'd try something new. I see this Digg function around alot and I've started Digging a few articles here and there. It seems like a good way to get a little more exposure.

So at the bottom of every post (under the Leave a Comment and Labels links) there's a little blue and white Digg This Story button. Feel free to click on the button and submit which ever story is your favorite. It'll help to expose the story to other readers that have the same taste. You might have to register with Digg to do this.

Registering with the site is fairly easy. Once you do, they'll show you to other sites and articles that you might enjoy as well.

Give it a shot, ya never know, you might like it.

Here We Go...

Sorry about the lack of posting as of late. With the new year starting things have been a little hectic. New procedures have been put together at work and its been interesting to see how they've worked out.

A few years ago the city of Chicago almost passed a smoking ban. I was weary about them passing the ban because if they passed the ban then I figured we'd be next. Well, Chicago didn't pass the smoking ban but it wasn't necessarily because they didn't want to. It was because the whole state of Illinois decided to go non-smoking.

The state of Illinois has passed, what many have called, the most stringent smoking ban to date. Which goes along with Illinois being known as a Police State.

The major difference between Illinois' smoking ban and that of other states is that it's focused primarily on the employees health rather than the patrons. Which is fun to explain to the non-smoking patrons that come to the establishment and think the state loves them. It's not about you, it's about the waitress that doesn't smoke and you don't tip.

One thing about Illinois ban is the fresh air clause. According to rumor there isn't an air recycling unit that can work fast enough to keep up with the state's mandate. When I look over the Act online there are a lot of Sections missing to it so there's no way to tell.

There are also a lot of businesses that are already being hurt by the ban. There are smoke shops that are slowly closing down. If the business is a tobacco shop then you can't sell beverage or food. In fact, you have to give up those licenses completely. I've even seen a few restaurant's that have shut down their kitchens just so the regulars in the neighborhood can keep on smoking. They think they have a way around it. Wait until it's time to pay bills, they'll wish they had kept it open.

A big state ban is strange. People feel like their Rights are being taken away from them. In part, they are. It's the right to choose. The right to your own choice. If things were done a little differently then it wouldn't be so bad.

I don't want to get into all the little schematical issues over it.

This just makes work a lot more difficult. Now instead of just making sure everyone plays nice we have to make sure the kids aren't smoking inside the building. Anyone caught gets tossed for doing something that we've all done for years. So there should be some interesting reactions in the near future.

I've been telling myself that now is a good time to quit. The rebellious side of me just keeps winning the argument. When you keep the law for so long you let the rebellious side win at times. Maybe in a few months...

Be safe.

Brotherly Love...

"I'm just saying... If your tired, your tired."

"It's just a slump, I'll be fine once these holidays are over."

"You don't usually fall into slumps."

My brother and I don't always see things eye to eye. We both see things in a pretty clear manner, almost in a black and white scenario. It's either good or bad and it's either something we do or we don't do. Sometimes he tends to look at things a little deeper than I do.

"I'm just saying, if your already thinking of doing other things then maybe you should look into other things."

"I'm not too worried about it. It'll pass with the holidays."

"Ok, just don't come running to me when it doesn't."

"When have you ever known me to come running to you?"

"Your here now aren't you?"

"I definitely didn't run here. I drove."

"Ha ha... dickhead."

The weekend was pretty uneventful. We went out and had a good time, checked out a few bars and even caught a band or two. It still didn't cure the restlessness that I've been feeling lately.

We left Sunday and I got back today.

More posts to come.

Blogs & the holidays...

With the holidays approaching so does a lot of travel time. So I may not be able to update as frequently as I'd like to. So I jumped on the Twitter band wagon so I can do some small mobile posts.

You can keep up with my mobile posts at: http://twitter.com/mike_drmn

I also put the Twitter widget on the left of the page under the Recent Comments.

Twitter is very easy to use and it's a good way to keep up without a computer around. I haven't jumped into the laptop area just yet and it's pretty hard to carry a desktop pc around on your back. So with all this said I'll introduce you to a few other blogs that you might like as well. This way you can keep up with them until I can get back on to a regular post basis.

Kimchihead

I just started reading Kimchihead a couple months ago. I really like the way this guy writes.

His style is like the old gritty detective stories that you might associate with from the 1940's. He's very descriptive and the entries he posts are like stories all in their own. There's a slight backdrop of insight and a lesson in each one. Some of the stories even pull at the strings of the heart.

Clublife

Clublife has been a blog that I've read for a long time. It actually gave me the idea to start up this blog. I hate to say that I'm following someone's example but everyone does at some point. I'm not out looking for a book deal but I'm glad that he found his. We're similar in some senses but the environments are different.

So if you want to see another doorman's perspective jump over and read his. The archives are well worth reading. In fact, you might want to start with his oldest posts first.

Blogdiggidy!

Angie T brings you Chicago. Her posts are usually humorous and she has an undying love for a certain politician. Throw in odd posts of comedians and her own insight and you have a great read.

If you want to check out any of the blogs that I check up on, feel free to follow the links in the link section on the left. I need to go through and clean house though.. Some of them seem to be collecting dust. Too bad, I really enjoyed reading them. I can understand though, there have been times that I've thought about hanging up my keyboard too.

I'll be posting infrequently until the holidays are over.

Have a great holiday and I'll probably be back before you know it.

Be safe.

Adsense or nosense...

Every once in a while I take a look at the ads that Google puts on my page. I opted for the ads because I figure if people actually use them and I can make a few bucks here and there it's not a bad thing. After 6 months I've made a penny. So they're not really worth it to me. They do offer a bit of eyebrow raising and thought occasionally.

They change fairly often since they're supposed to go through the posts and find prevalent topics to offer search options for. Yet, I don't think they're working very well. Or they're working in the exact opposite way.

For instance, here are the ads that I see now as I write this.

Ads that make no sense: Friend Poems, Quotes, Love Letter Poems, Romance Poems, Poems about Women, The Power of Nice, Bring Back Lost Love, Romantic Love

Ads that make sense: Deal w/ Difficult People, Workplace Issues

So I guess 2 out of 15 isn't too bad....

I've been looking at a few different sites that offer payments for postings and other types of advertisement options to make a little cash. I figure if people only have to click on something and it offers something they want to look at and it doesn't bother their pc, then what's to lose? We both win.

So in a few days I'll more than likely have some new eye candy on the side of the page. Maybe I'll actually make enough for a cup of coffee before work. Who knows.. maybe even a steak dinner. Ok, I'm getting a little far ahead of myself there.

I wonder if any newspapers would be interested in a doorman's opinion column? It might go well in a Nightlife section. Ha ha!! Yea.. I don't think the world really wants to know what doormen and club security personnel think of them. If they did there'd be a lot more blogs and columns out there about us. Then again, the world thinks we're all muscle bound idiots.

More to come.

Same place, different name?....

Well, the stomping grounds here look the same... everything reads the same... So what's the difference?

I finally decided to get a domain name for the blog. I know it's nothing very fancy but it will be a little easier for anyone to find if they're not at home.

So here it is... the mighty domain name that you can find me at.

www.diaryofadoorman.com

That's the whole kit an caboodle. I know it's not much to people who delve into this internet fancy world all the time but to me it's a lot. It's like nailing yourself to something and knowing your not getting away from it. Wait.. why'd I do this again??

This site can still be accessed the same way you do now. The name will just make it easier for people to find it through search engines and for them to remember.

On a different note.....

This coming weekend is Labor Day weekend which means there will be lots of drunkenness to be had. I might not update again until next Monday though. These holiday weekends are usually a lot of hours for me and by the time I get home I just want to pass out. So there's a small chance I'll update but more than likely you'll see an update some time late on Monday.

Be safe.

Moving on...

A little over a year and a half ago I was supposed to be moving on from where I am now. I had the means, the ability and a good friend that was going to help me out. (I shouldn't say was because I'm pretty sure the possibility is still there.) It would involve moving a few states away and I'd no longer be in the midwest. That wouldn't really bother me I don't think. I wouldn't have to deal with winter as much but I would miss the weather that used to be more familiar with October.

Of course, at the time the move was mostly focused on money. The amount that could be made where I was going and the amount that I was making at the time. Which I've found with most people my age is a big part of the decision when it comes to moving. If your moving and your going to make a lot more money then you can always come back to visit.

Like most of my family I haven't moved very far from home. I've never seen the need for it. I was brought up that you do what you want to and keep a steady income. The income part has been a slight teeter tooter over the years but it's finally at a point where I'm comfortable. That is, if I stay a single person without a family. It also depends on if I want insurance or a better car or to live on my own without a roommate. If I want any of that I'm going to have to either get a second job or a better job. At this point in the game I don't want a second job. I was also raised that if your primary job doesn't handle all your needs then it's time for a new one.

Now I've tried a few different ways to get revenue. Most of the things I've tried haven't paid off very well, none of which include anything illegal. I have too much of a guilty conscious to try selling drugs or anything like that. I think it's because I like my freedom too much and really don't want to experience the world behind a set of bars.

However, a few different ideas have popped into my head lately. I've even brought them up to Paulie thinking that it might be something worth while. They're mostly ideas pertaining to the bar but on a higher level. To each idea comes the same retort, "Just wait, there's something big coming up and your going to be involved in it."

Now, I've never really had a reason to not believe Paulie, but it's becoming a nuisance. I just don't like hearing shit like that. If there's some kind of plan in the works for me personally at a place of business then I want to know about it. I don't want someone to keep telling me to hurry up and wait. Either tell me what's going on or just drop the subject and ignore me. Then we'll see just how long I stick around.

So when I originally talked to Paulie about moving and finding someone to replace me he didn't like it. He didn't want me to leave because he had just came on as the new manager a few months before. So the company did what they did to keep me around.

As of late I've been thinking that it might be time for it all to happen again. After you work in a bar or club for long enough you begin to grow tired of it. Especially when your the only guy working and your extremely limited to the things you can do.

I've always compared my job to babysitting a room full of 5 year olds but I think even that might be a little more fun than a room full of 22 - 40 year olds that are drunk off their ass.. constantly. That's not just talking about the customers but some of the employees as well.

As per the norm, I'll keep you posted if anything ever comes of this. As of now this is just a thought that's been going through my head a lot lately.

Who knows... maybe the owners are going to open a new bar and make me a manager. Then I'd have to change this to Diary of a Bar Manager...

Nah.. That just doesn't have the same ring....

100 Posts...

Here it is... number 100... I have very few regular readers but the ones I have check in on a regular basis if not daily. To you I want to say Thank you. If you didn't come back so often I might have just given up on it and did it somewhere else.

As you might have noticed my posts are starting to become a little more regular as I've opened up the topic a little more with time. I've already passed the amount of blogs I did last year and I'm still half way to reaching what I did in the first 6 months.

The entries are becoming a little less powerful as they were in the beginning but such is life. With time everything becomes a little bland. That's why I started opening the blog up a little more with other topics. Not to worry, there are some past events that still need to be posted and I'm sure new things will pop up as they always do. New endeavors will sprout new posts and so on.

I also noticed that it's now been a little over 2 years since I originally created this blog. Looking back at the Welcome post a few things have changed. Mainly work related things including the forced rejections. They have happened and I've spoken of them here. It's not something that I look forward to happening, it's just a part of the job when I'm forced into that situation.

Just to give a reminder to what I hope this blog could show to everyone that reads it.

Not all doormen or bouncers are the stereotypical "idiot". They're not all muscle bound guys that like to show off their strength. They don't all like to fight. Not all of them do this as their main form of employment. Not all of them are "man-whores".

I also hope that people might read this and look at it from the point of view I try to put out there. Maybe someone can read this and look back at something that happened to them and realize why it happened. Doormen are just doing their job. We get paid to make a decision and stand by it. It's easier for some people because that's how we were raised by our fathers and we have the size to stand up. It is the type of job that you have to be ready for. It's not the type of job for any Joe Schmoe to just do. If you can't handle every day conflicts then you can't handle this type of job for a long period of time.

Now that I'm opening up the blog a little more with my personal opinions on certain subjects I hope that it might become a little more accessible to the readers. With this post I'm going to open up the comments so people can post comments. Feel free to post any comments you like. It's open to non-registered users but I have taken the liberty to moderate comments. It's the best option that I think I have at this time. You can also contact me through e-mail and AOL instant messenger. That information is on the right side of the page at all times.

Feel free to send me any questions you have and I'll answer them here.

On the right of the site there's also a subscription box where you can enter your email address and you can get all these updates in your inbox. There's a few people there now and it would be great to see even more. It's a free service and you don't have to sign up for anything more than the delivery.

Also, if you haven't noticed. I have added Google Ads onto the page as well. Feel free to click away on these. Every click helps send me a little money and it doesn't even come out of your pocket. Think of it as "Greasing the doorguy."

Alright, that's all for now. I'm off to work or sleep and I'll post here soon again.

Be safe.
